Nbc Investigates the Prohibited Online Market for Rf Jammers

Nbc Looks into the Unauthorized Online Transactions Involving Rf Jammers

As reported by NBC News, online retailers and drone technology enterprises are marketing RF jammers as deterrents against drones or as privacy tools, managing to sidestep laws that ban the sale of such devices in the United States.

According to a warning from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the use of signal jamming devices can obstruct emergency calls, thereby endangering public safety communications. In addition, these devices interfere with various everyday communication methods and air navigation systems.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has declared that the use of phone jammers, GPS blocker, or similar signal jamming devices that are designed to intentionally obstruct, disrupt, or interfere with authorized radio communications is a violation of federal law. This prohibition extends to all settings, including businesses, classrooms, homes, and vehicles. Furthermore, local law enforcement agencies are not authorized to use jamming devices on their own; only federal law enforcement agencies may do so, and only under certain regulatory conditions.

As per the FCC warning, it is illegal for individuals or entities to advertise, sell, distribute, import, or otherwise market jamming devices to consumers in the United States.

As reported by NBC, third-party sellers on Amazon, independent online retailers based in China, and small domestic enterprises specializing in drone-related equipment are neglecting the law. The FCC has informed NBC that it is investigating the sale of phone jammer, including those offered on Amazon.

In its investigation, NBC News reached out to the CEO of a US-based company that offers portable anti-drone radio frequency jammers for sale online. The CEO shared with NBC News that these devices can be easily acquired by consumers with adequate financial means, but the main interest is predominantly from large corporations and government bodies as they prepare for the risks associated with domestic drone terrorism.
