We've got some roster moves, Pirates fans! But don’t get too excited—these aren’t blockbuster deals.
On Friday night, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced the signing of catcher Ali Sánchez to a one-year contract and the acquisition of right-handed pitcher Roddery Muñoz off waivers from the Washington Nationals. In addition, the team officially confirmed the release of right-hander Thomas Hatch, who is expected to join the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
A Look at Ali Sánchez
Sánchez has bounced around a bit in recent years. Originally picked up on waivers by the Pirates in October, he was placed back on waivers less than two months later, only to be claimed by the Arizona Diamondbacks on December 2. His MLB experience is limited, having appeared in just seven games—five with the New York Mets in 2020 and two with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2021. Over those appearances, he recorded three hits in 13 at-bats.
However, Sánchez put up strong numbers in the minors last season, hitting .311 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs in 67 games with the Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate, Reno. Defensively, he logged 427 innings behind the plate, throwing out 22 runners while allowing 42 stolen bases. Though reports suggest he may have been offered a split contract, no official details have been confirmed.
Roddery Muñoz: A Young Pitching Prospect
Muñoz, meanwhile, has yet to make his MLB debut. The right-handed starter had an up-and-down 2023 season, posting a 4-6 record with a 5.42 ERA while pitching across three levels and four teams. Originally part of the Atlanta Braves' system, he was designated for assignment in July and quickly claimed by Washington. He finished the season at Triple-A Rochester, where he struggled, going 1-3 with a 6.98 ERA in 12 games.
